York and Harrogate Support Programme : ‘Empowering Choices’ with Living 4 Moments

An opportunity for care homes registered in City of York Council or Harrogate Borough Council areas to receive fully funded staff training delivered in their premises. ‘Empowering Choices’ aims to enable health and social care professionals to become less risk averse with their clients in order to bring about better outcomes and improve their quality of life.

About the training

The training programme is entitled ‘Empowering Choices’, and aims to enable health and social care professionals to become less risk averse with their clients in order to bring about better outcomes and improve their quality of life. By understanding and applying the relevant legislation, clients and patients are able to make meaningful choices that matter to them. It also helps professionals manage their time more effectively through improved communication.

This ninety minute overview helps staff to get a feel for what it is like being denied choice and how to enable those in their care to make their own choices and can be delivered to managers and staff (or a mixture of the two), ingroups of any size. This training will be bespoke, so to make the best of the opportunity, it would be helpful to understand the delegates’ experience and expectations prior to delivery.

The training looks at four key areas:

  • Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005
  • Care Act 2014
  • Human Rights
  • Risk Assessments

If your business is based in City of York Council or Harrogate Borough Council, this training is fully-funded by your local authority and is delivered in-person at  your business, although there is also an option for online delivery where appropriate, especially towards the winter months when COVID-19 and other illnesses are more prevalent.

About the delivery partner

The training will be delivered by Rachel Barber of Living 4 Moments, whose courses are based on lived experiences and research into best practices, as Rachel is profoundly deaf and has years of experience working in different care settings. She has been very proactive in understanding and applying the Mental Capacity Act 2005. This is because Rachel has experienced and witnessed assumptions made by professionals (in both health and social care) that deny opportunities for clients. When the MCA is applied well, with understanding and sensitivity, clients have meaningful conversations and choices.

Rachel has a Master’s degree in Business Administration (Sheffield Hallam University), a Psychology Honours degree (University of York), a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (University of Southampton) and an ILM Coaching qualification Level 3 (Leeds Beckett University). Rachel has also participated in Senior Leadership courses as well as Safeguarding level 1, 2 & 3, the Mental Capacity Act level 1, 2 & 3 and Falls Prevention from the Clinical Commissioning Group.
